The Others

I'm trying to learn French, and as I'm failing at it I notice that I have to learn what French people call other countries.

Now, this isn't specific to French, but why are there different names for other countries in different languages? I'm pretty sure people didn't tell different visitors slightly different names.

I think there should be one name for each country pronounced however the natives want it to be pronounced.

And while I'm on this train of thought, no more calling it soccer. No one's going to get it confused, just call it European Football or Rest-of-the-world Football.
